The drawings for the show, Death and the Maiden, straddle two of my favorite subjects: death and gender roles. Death And The Maiden (A Musical Interlude) was the first drawing in this series that I completed and it served as the impetus for all of the other works.

These images cover a lot of territory and touch on many different subjects. Beseeching The Dead and Pursuit (Gabo’s Butterflies) are both interpretations of literary images borrowed from the writers Joyce Carol Oates and Gabriel García Márquez, respectively. Other topics include domestic violence, the consumerism of death, the scars of childhood, the role of women in the arenas of sex and domesticity, and The Holocaust.
